Periodical move complete!

We finished moving the bound periodicals from Coe Library to the Library Annex last week. See below for more details from Access Services about what this means for you. And a huge thank you to our staff for all their hard work moving the collections!

Friday morning we moved the last book truck of pre-2005 bound journal volumes from Coe Library to the Library Annex. This project to make space in Coe to accommodate renovation began in May 2006 with the conversion of the Science Library to the Library Annex. With today’s shipment, Coe and Annex staff have relocated approximately 450,000 volumes by loading them onto book trucks, driving the carts to the Annex, unloading them onto the movable shelving and returning book trucks back to Coe so the process can start all over. Another way of thinking about this 28 month project is that it filled approximately 7 miles of shelving in the Library Annex.

For library users the major consequence of this project is that, except for the Geology collection, all 2005 and earlier volumes are now in the Library Annex. They are available for use there or may be obtained electronically through the Libraries’ Request It service. Another result was to create space in Coe for the growing book collections and to allow the Libraries to clear spaces within the building so renovation was possible. The physical move of materials was accomplished by Coe and Annex shelving staff, ably assisted by Technical Services staff identification of titles to be moved and changing locations of moved volumes to the Annex.

If you could do anything tomorrow…

… what would it be?

A British website asked creative artists and designers that question and they produced some beautiful results. Jason Munn would stay in and draw, while Tom Gauld would go to space.

I’ll pose the same question to our blog readers on this hot summer day: if you could do anything tomorrow, what would it be?

Did you miss the 2008 Undergraduate Research Day? Or perhaps you want to revisit the more compelling student projects? Good news! Research Day projects are now archived online by the UW Libraries. Visit them and learn more.

Undergraduate Research Day 2008 is our newest digital collection. We are also adding a collection entitled Architecture of Saratov, Russia that was translated from Russian. Eventually we will add content from the Annals of Wyoming, first as digital PDFs (digital microfiche), then as full text readable and searchable content.

Print Wikipedia and Google Knol on their way
Friday July 25th 2008, 8:42 am

I thought I was reading a headline in The Onion when I first learned that Wikipedia was going into print. I checked the dateline, too, but no April Fool’s joke here.

According to The Guardian, encyclopedia publisher Bertelsmann will print a one volume edition of the German Wikipedia in September. The 50,00 entries will be based on popularity. Bertelsmann’s Beate Varnhorn remains optimistic about print resources:

“We think the market for print reference books remains positive,” said Varnhorn. “The book is highly flexible, I can use it on the sofa while watching television, at the desk, in the garden or in bed, without having to turn on the computer.”

Google, it seems, would disagree. The search giant unleashes its own user-generated encyclopedia, Google Knol, this week. The content and structure will differ from Wikipedia:

“The key principle behind Knol is authorship. Every knol will have an author (or group of authors) who put their name behind their content,” the company wrote on its blog Wednesday. “It’s their knol, their voice, their opinion. We expect that there will be multiple knols on the same subject, and we think that is good.”

I get the feeling that the world of encyclopedias is circling in on itself these days, trying to find the best model. Do you prefer to use encyclopedias online or in print? Does Wikipedia meet your needs?
